Chapter 11

“You can’t control everything. Your hair was put on your head to remind you of that.” ~ Meme

The next morning, Lexi had just finished restocking the towels in one of their rooms when she noticed a peculiar looking woman standing on the outside walkway in a big floppy hat, wearing a Hawaiian Mumu style dress that seemed to swallow her small figure. She looked vaguely familiar.

Lexi did a double-take. “Sabrina?”

She turned, and Lexi took in the black wig that completed the disguise. She hadn’t seen that one in a while.

“How did you know it was me?”

“Um, I’m your sister?” Lexi deadpanned.

“But you don’t think anyone else would recognize me, right?”

“It’s not likely.”

“Good.”

They walked together towards the main lodge. “What’s up?” Lexi asked. “Anyone come around here giving you a hard time?”

“Not yet, but with Luke here, and that photographer around, I can never be too careful. I got tired of hiding in my room.”

That bothered Lexi more than it probably did Sabrina. She had Luke to thank for bringing the Wilder Sisters a renewal in attention, but she also had to thank him for zero vacancy and a long wait list. Catch-22.

“You shouldn’t have to hide.”

The daily news cycle brought a scandal every day. Of course, most of the people of Whistle Cove didn’t much care about scandals that were far worse than Sabrina’s indiscretion. They simply cared that this was Sabrina Wilder, one of their own, and she should have known better.

Outsiders, however, had been far less forgiving. The emails and tweets had said so.

“I know, but hey, sometimes it’s kind of fun. And I put together these outfits, so might as well get some more use out of them.”

When Lexi thought back to over a year ago, life in Whistle Cove was much better now. On the road, they’d been hounded after The Scandal. Tabloid magazines had begged for an interview, and when refused, pieced together what they could from “confidential sources.” Paparazzi hounded them from city to city on the last leg of their tour, hoping to catch a glimpse of the terrible, awful, no good, reckless Sabrina Wilder. The record label wouldn’t have minded much if all of that had helped sales. Unfortunately, it had the opposite effect. At home, they’d endured some chastising for a short while from some of the less than kind townspeople.

“You need to stop worrying what people think. If they want to slut shame you, that’s their problem. They don’t know you.”

“How did it go with Luke yesterday?” Sabrina changed the subject.

“All right. Except he took me to the Crow’s Nest. Forced me to get up and sing the song.”

Even under the shadow caused by the wide brimmed hat, Lexi got a good look at Sabrina’s wide eyes. “Really? You got up and played?”

“I tried to set him up, and he set me up.”

“I don’t know why you won’t give him another chance. It’s not like he’d ever sell photos of your boobs to the highest bidder.”

Sure, and that was Lexi’s only requirement for a man.
